A violent fire hit the Littlewoods building on Sunday night, said a famous Art Deco building in Liverpool, the county fire department of northern Merseyside.
Firefighters were warned around 8:00 PM local time (the same time in Lisbon) and found the roof of the building on fire, indicating that one and a half hour later the fire destroyed 40% of the building but did not kill anyone.
The Littlewoods building, created in the Littlewoods empire, founded by distribution magnate and football fan Sir John Moores, was built in 1938 on Edge Lane outside of Liverpool.
The fire "is very serious, I hope and I pray [o edifício] can be saved ", wrote Liverpool Mayor Joe Anderson on Twitter.
The building had been empty since 2003 and had already been the subject of several rehabilitation projects, all without success. The building was recently sold and was soon to be transformed into a film and television studio.
