Competition Operalia arrives today in the final with Portuguese Luís Gomes as one of the candidates

In the semi-finals of the Opera and Zarzuela categories, which took place on Thursday at the TNSC, stage of this edition of Operalia, the Portuguese singer qualified for the final of the two parts.

The last show, today at 6 pm, is open to the public and will count on the participation of the Portuguese Symphony Orchestra, directed by Plácido Domingo, founder of the contest.

Luís Gomes studied at the National Conservatory of Lisbon, at the Superior School of Music in Lisbon and at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London, where he graduated in voice and master in opera.

He went to the Royal Opera House and debuted in June on the stage of the National Theater of San Carlos at "La Traviata", with a role to be performed in October in the Coliseu do Porto.

In addition to Luís Gomes, Migran Agadzhanyan (Russia), Rihab Chaieb (Canada), Emily D & # 39; Angelo (Canada / Italy), Samantha Hankey (USA), Johannes Kammler (Germany), Long Long), Pavel Petrov (Belarus ), Sean Michael Plumb (USA), Simon Shibambu (South Africa), Marina Viotti (Switzerland / France) and Arseny Yakovlev (Russia).

In the final of Zarzuela are Emily D & # 39; Angelo, Luís Gomes, Pavel Petrov, Josy Santos (Brazil) and Vanessa Vasquez (Colombia / USA).

The first prize, for the best female and male voice, is $ 30,000, about € 25,700.

The Operalia World Opera Contest, now in the 26th edition, is an initiative of the Spanish tenor and conductor Plácido Domingo, the current director general of the Los Angeles Opera (California).

Last Monday Plácido Domingo said at a press conference in Lisbon that Operalia is a "very important" initiative to attract young talent.

The jury of the competition includes directors of international opera houses, including Patrick Dickie (artistic director of S. Carlos), Anthony Freud (from Chicago Lyric Opera), Joan Marabosch (from the Teatro Real in Madrid) and the soprano Marta Domingo. , wife of Plácido Domingo.

The first edition of Operalia was held in Paris in 1993 and had already taken place in cities such as Tokyo, Hamburg, Budapest, Milan, Moscow, Beijing, Verona, Los Angeles, Mexico City, London, Madrid and Guadalajara.
