A team of scientists at Harvard Medical School in Boston conducted a study where they found whether multivitamins are really as useful as they are offered by manufacturers.

According to scientists, the benefits of complex vitamins have been greatly exaggerated. To be sure of this, experts conducted an experiment involving people who regularly take nutritional supplements.


Multivitamins usually contain minimal amounts of individual vitamins. They will not be able to make up for your deficits and maintain the required level. Most vitamins can be obtained from food. Vitamin D is found in seafood and fish, for example, so if you eat these foods 2-3 times a week, you don’t need multivitamin complexes. But for normal vitamin D levels, the sun is still required, therefore it will be difficult for residents of northern latitudes to maintain normal levels of this vitamin without additional nutritional supplements, – explained to ridus.ru Natalia Balashova, endocrinologist, researcher at the aforementioned Clinical Institute M. Vladimirsky (MONIKI).

In their study, scientists analyzed medical records of nearly 21,000 people. Before starting the experiment, all participants were asked if they were taking vitamins. Nearly 5,000 people said they regularly take multivitamins, while over 16,000 do not take supplements.

Vitamins were generally consumed by the elderly or middle and high income families. Women were more likely to take multivitamins than men, the scientists noted.

The participants were also given standard questions about their health, chronic diseases and lifestyle.

It turned out that people who took vitamins found themselves to be healthier than people who, for whatever reason, did not drink nutritional supplements. These participants were 30 percent more likely to report doing well.

But this appearance is deceptive, given that the two groups of participants had about the same number of chronic illnesses and also went to hospitals with equal frequency. A strong belief that multivitamins work can lead people to feel healthier than they really are. It is possible that these people are more positive about life and are used to not dwelling on difficulties, write the authors of the work.

Study participants typically took a multivitamin containing a wide variety of vitamins, such as vitamins A, C, D, E and K, calcium, magnesium, dietary fiber, choline and potassium. All of these vitamins are necessary for our body, but they can be obtained along with food, the authors of the work are sure.

If you want to make up for deficiencies, it is better not to use multivitamin complexes, but individual vitamins with normal dosages, doctors advise.
