MOSCOW, November 30 – RIA Novosti. Turkish scientists have found that the number of SARS-CoV-2 viruses in the body of asymptomatic patients is higher than in patients with symptoms. In their view, this fundamentally differentiates the new coronavirus from other pathogens and explains why many countries’ efforts to contain the pandemic are failing. A related article published in the journal Infection. All previous studies suggest that asymptomatic carriers can spread infection even when they don’t have a fever or are coughing. But what the Turkish researchers found came as a surprise: The study authors assessed the viral load in six types of patients, who differed in age and disease severity. Therefore, they looked for the relationship between the course of the disease and the viral load in COVID-19. Researchers collected samples from the nasopharynx, throat, oral cavity, and rectum, as well as analyzes of saliva, blood, and urine from 60 patients with a confirmed coronavirus. A quarter of them showed no symptoms. In total, the researchers analyzed 360 samples and found that all asymptomatic patients had a higher viral load than those with symptoms. Moreover, this indicator decreased as the severity of the disease and the age of the patient increased. “COVID-19 is a complex puzzle consisting of many puzzles. Virological and immunological studies are urgently needed to bring it all together and see the big picture,” write the authors of the article. the study, unlike others, shows that asymptomatic patients have a higher SARS-CoV-2 viral load than symptomatic patients, and with increasing disease severity, there is a significant decrease in viral load. According to scientists, the low viral load of SARS-CoV-2 correlates with factors contributing to a poor prognosis of infection, such as bilateral “ground glass” on chest CT scan, low lymphocyte counts and increased age. The authors suggest that higher viral loads in asymptomatic patients can only be the tip of the iceberg related to the spread of COVID-19 Current data on the situation with COVID-19 in Russia this and the world are presented on the portal stop koronavirus.rf.

All previous studies suggest that asymptomatic carriers can spread the infection even if they don’t have a fever or are coughing. But what the Turkish scientists discovered was completely unexpected.
The study authors assessed the level of viral load in six types of patients, varying in age and disease severity. So they looked for the relationship between the course of the disease and the viral load in COVID-19.
The researchers collected samples from the nasopharynx, throat, oral cavity and rectum, as well as saliva, blood and urine tests from 60 patients with confirmed coronavirus. A quarter of them showed no symptoms. In total, the scientists analyzed 360 samples.

All asymptomatic patients were found to have a higher viral load than those with symptoms. In addition, this indicator decreased with an increase in the severity of the disease and the age of the patient.
“COVID-19 is a tricky jigsaw puzzle. Virological and immunological studies are urgently needed to bring it all together and see the big picture,” write the authors. “Our study, in contrast to others, shows that asymptomatic patients have a higher viral load of SARS-CoV-2 than symptomatic patients, and with increasing disease severity there is a significant decrease in viral load.”
According to scientists, the low viral load of SARS-CoV-2 correlates with factors that determine the poor prognosis of the course of the infection, such as double-sided “ground glass” on chest CT, low lymphocyte count and age.
The authors suggest that the higher viral load in asymptomatic patients may be just the tip of the iceberg for the problems associated with the spread of COVID-19.
