The Association of Professional Carriers of Serbia has asked the competent institutions to consider and improve the inspection of the rivers and to set up a unit for rapid action in emergency situations on the rivers to prevent accidents in the future.

According to Podunavlje.info, on Monday, August 20, around 8 o'clock in the vicinity of Smederevo, on the 1108 kilometers of the Danube on the right bank, the self-propelled cargo ship "Tomas" sank. The accident took place after loading on a floating excavator "Crni", which is located 4 kilometers downstream of the accident site.
Sinking occurred at a high speed due to the penetration of water into the hull, now for unknown reasons. The commander of the ship, with a quick response, succeeded in forcing the ship to shore along the coast, thereby preventing a greater tragedy and possible loss of human lives. After the incident the commander immediately informed the port authority of Smederevo by telephone. The crew left the building independently and all crew members succeeded without any injury.
The problem arose in the speed of operation of navigation and the port of authority, says Association of Professional Carriers of Serbia. Sinking took place on 20 August and the inspection came to the survey 2 (two) days later, on 22 August. The place of the accident was 2 days without supervisionno one has been sent to the crew, the installation is not equipped with a barrier in the event of fuel waste, no declaration has been issued to the shipowners, no sunning has been stopped or delayed on that part of the Danube, so that the stranded ship two days was constantly threatening to tip over and the building would sink completely.
The Association of Professional Carriers of Serbia recalls that only 20 km from the scene of the accident is an area of international importance, a special nature reserve "Delibatska peščara" – Rasad region "Labudovo okno". The whole area of the reserve is threatened by the poor operation of the navigation inspection and the lack of a fast response service on rivers.
