Germany prohibits diesel engines on parts of the motorway

It was only a matter of time before the German courts, except in cities, began to introduce speed bumps for older diesel cars and important parts of the cult Autoban, writes Deutsche Welle.

Let us recall that the administrative court decided a few days ago that the cities of Bonn and Cologne had to ban diesel engines that did not meet the purity standards for exhaust fumes. Diesel engines with Euro 4 standards will no longer be able to transport the centers of these two cities from April next year, while this ban will also affect the Euro 5 diesel engines that will be banned from September 2019 onwards.

This is all due to the fact that Stuttgart, Frankfurt, Mainz, Aachen and Berlin have already announced such plans, while in Hamburg some of the diesel engines have already been banned. Now, for the first time, to the great surprise of many, they have decided to introduce a ban on the use of older diesel and on the motorway.

Particularly on parts of the A40 motorway, one of the most severely affected sections going through the industrial Rursk area and across the German-Dutch border, with the beginning of the application of the ban since July of the following year.

The ban also applies to certain areas of Gelzenkirchen and Esen. Nevertheless, the Autoban almost represents the sacred for the Germans, something very different from the center of cities, the wreck of the entire traffic and the general connection of the country. With this unprecedented decision the ban on traffic to older diesel engines on the motorways is a clear message from the court – goodbye to diesel.

From July next year, when the ban comes into force, other parts of the country with a strong eco-lobby can be followed by the main routes of the Autobahn, which would certainly mark the "final drop" of diesel.

But even without such a scenario, the sale of new diesel engines in Germany has already dropped dramatically to just 31.1 percent of the total number of vehicles sold in the first half of 2018, compared with 43.1 percent last year and it would soon be the only can be affected by countless indicators.
