Three quarters of Serbs provide personal information at a discount



Both in Serbia and across Europe, citizens are turning to austerity, especially as they are concerned about job losses from the Covid-19 pandemic. They spend less and less time in classic stores to keep to the standard of social distance. However, the survey also found that consumers are willing to take a higher risk when it comes to their personal data, to give discounts and save money during the holidays.

Give three frtals (still less than the European average)

Kaspersky’s latest research has shown this to be the case Three in four (76.2%) Serbian consumers are willing to share their personal information, such as email addresses and phone numbers, with merchants to get greater discounts when shopping during the holiday season. It’s no comforting that this is a slightly better result than the European average, where as many as four in five (84%) European consumers would do the same.

As the holidays get closer, many consumers budget for expenses and try to save as much as possible. This situation has led many consumers to take risks to get a bigger discount. Just under a fifth (18.1%) of respondents in Serbia and only a quarter (25%) of European respondents are aware that fraud is more common during the holidays and the sale period and are not willing to take the risk run on big discounts. Only every ninth (11.8%) of respondents from Serbia stated that they would only buy from major brands during Christmas sales to avoid security risks. Every fifth (17%) respondent in Europe is aware of this

Kaspersky’s findings also show that only a small number of consumers are aware that problems can arise if they are not careful enough when shopping online – especially given that the holidays are known for phishing. For example, just over a fifth (22.2%) of respondents in Serbia and a third (33%) of European respondents stated that they were not ready to visit a website that did not look authentic. A significant proportion of respondents in Serbia (38.9%) showed slightly more experience than the European average (29%) when it comes to potential security risks associated with unknown brands offering large discounts, which may turn out to be on fraud.

All shoppers looking for the best deals are advised to exercise caution and watch out for potential scams when shopping online during the holiday season. Shop online safely this holiday season keep the following tips:

  • Only shop at legitimate online stores. It’s always safer to type in an address yourself, or select it from your bookmark option, than click on a link. Pay attention to your browser’s address field to make sure the website you are visiting is correct and secure
  • Make a purchase with secure payment methods. Pay with credit cards or with a payment service to protect your transaction
  • Take a good look at the discounts. If you receive a discount notification via email or message, make sure the sender and all web links are legitimate before clicking on it
