SINGAPORE: Happiness can extend life among older adults, say scientists, including one of Indian descent. The study, published in the journal Age and Aging, used data for 4,478 participants in a survey to look at the association between happiness, assessed in the year 2009, and the subsequent probability of death due to any cause, up to 31 December 2015.
"The findings indicate that even small increases in happiness can be beneficial for the longevity of older people," said Rahul Malhotra, assistant professor at Duke-NUS Medical School in Singapore.
"Therefore, individual-level activities, as well as government policies and programs that maintain or improve happiness or psychological well-being, can contribute to a longer life among the elderly," said Malhotra.
The study was aimed at persons of 60 years and older living in Singapore.
