PM Lee congratulates the new Australian Prime Minister Morrison, with a penitent farewell letter to former leader Turnbull



SINGAPORE: Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong has written a letter of congratulations to the new Prime Minister of Australia, Scott Morrison, and a farewell letter to the former leader of the country, Malcolm Turnbull.

Mr. Morrison, the former Australian treasurer, was appointed the new prime minister of the country after winning a three-time battle for the leadership of the Liberal Party on Friday (August 24) by depositing Mr. Turnbull.

In a letter dated 26 August, Mr Lee congratulated Mr Morrison on his appointment as Prime Minister, taking note of the excellent relations that Singapore and Australia share in different sectors.

"The Comprehensive Strategic Partnership (CSP) has further improved the close relationship between our countries," Lee wrote.

"You have been a strong supporter of our bilateral relationship under your previous Immigration and Border Protection portfolios and the Treasury, and I look forward to working with you to strengthen our cooperation."

Mr. Lee recognizes the "vital role of Australia in protecting the rule of law in the global community and promoting peace and prosperity in the region".

He said he was looking forward to welcoming Mr. Morrison in Singapore for the 33rd ASEAN Summit and Related Summits in November, and invited him to attend Leaders & # 39; Summit Singapore Australia next year.

"I wish you good luck with your new appointment and I look forward to seeing you soon," Mr. Lee added.

Lee also wrote to former Australian Prime Minister Turnbull, who he is a "good friend of Singapore & # 39; called.

"I am grateful for your strong support for the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership," said Lee.

"This has initiated new partnerships and laid the foundation for new and long-term cooperation between Singapore and Australia."

Mr Lee thanked Mr Turnbull for his "personal support for the deeper involvement of Australia at ASEAN".

"I appreciate our frank and engaging discussions on issues of mutual interest, and our exchanges, formal and informal, about strategic developments in a time of current and uncertainty," he wrote.
