SINGAPORE – A 34-year-old freight forwarder, who sexually abused the eight-year-old daughter of his then school during the school holidays in 2014, was sentenced to 12½ years in prison and 15 strokes of the walking stick on Monday (August 20).
The court was told that the crimes came to light shortly after he sexually abused her for the third time, where the girl told a neighbor what the man had done. The neighbor picked up their conversation and played it on the mother of the girl.
Initially the 31-year-old mother threw the man out of the apartment, but gave in and took him back after begging for forgiveness.
It was not until February 2016 that sexual abuse was reported by the grandmother of the girl who took her to make a police report after discovering that the man had hit her granddaughter and left a bruise on her head.
The 54-year-old woman was aware of sexual abuse in the past when she made the official report of the police and feared that such actions might take place again.
The girl then told the police that she was molested several times and was sexually violated in 2014.
The man was arrested a few days later.
The parties can not be named because of a gag order to protect the identity of the victim.
On Monday (Aug. 20) the man begged to be guilty of counting each of committing an indecent act with a child, an aggravated assault by penetration and deriving the modesty of a minor.
Four other charges were taken into account, three of which related to sexual abuse in June 2014, and the fourth to the beat and beat of the girl in February 2016.
The court heard that the man, who is married to another woman, started a relationship with the victim's mother after her marriage failed.
They came together in 2012 and have two children because of the relationship. However, the man would stay with his wife on a regular basis.
One day in 2014, when the victim was home during the school holidays, he asked her to massage his legs and told her to bring her hands to his crotch.
On another occasion he told her to perform oral sex with him and also committed other sexual acts with her.
The victim's mother, who sat in court with her 11-month-old baby with the accused, filed a handwritten letter calling for leniency.
He described him as a "dutiful, loving responsible father and son", and said that she was disappointed and deeply grieved when she discovered the "scandalous incident."
But she said that she and the victim have accepted his apology and that her children "look forward to be reunited with him".
