The use of English is of vital importance in a global society, Letters in printed news and top stories

It is good that Mr. Bernard C. G. Law reminded us how important it is to use English as our official working language (important to speak English at public service offices, Aug. 21).

I often have a hard time communicating with public service providers who feel that most Chinese people like me can speak or understand Mandarin.

When I visit government agencies such as an outpatient clinic, the housing council or the Central Provident Fund Board, I have to respond in English when their staff on the front line greet me in Mandarin, where I can not speak.

Because we live in a global and cosmopolitan society, it is vital for us to see English as a lingua franca, not only in relation to fellow Singaporeans, but also with foreigners and tourists.

Singapore has a preference for large investments and many multinational companies need English-speaking employees who operate internationally.

Our public service providers are known for their efficiency and although friendliness can be expressed through certain actions, a small conversation can also make a difference.

Since Singapore is a multi-ethnic society, English is a language that can be used to unite Singaporeans.
