Anatomy of a K Drama Scene: Hyun Bin and Son Ye Jin’s ‘Candle’ Crash Landing on You Moment Is Really Underrated

In the latest edition of Anatomy of a K drama Scene, we look at an underrated romantic moment between Hyun Bin and Son Ye-jin in Crash Landing on You, where the former uses a scented candle to find the latter.

Crash lands on you has already reached cult status, even though it just aired between 2019 and 2020. One of the biggest reasons why TRANSHIPPING became such a global hit because of the palpable chemistry shared between Hyun Bin and Son Ye-jin as star-crossed lovers. While Bin played the reserved North Korean captain Ri Jung-hyuk, Ye-jin played the confident South Korean heiress Yoon Se-ri.

* SPOILERS ALERT * In the current choice for Anatomy of a drama scene, we take a look at one of the underappreciated romantic sequences between Jung-hyuk and Se-ri that would make the coldest hearts flutter. While their reunion and kissing sequences are perfect K-drama moments, we’re talking specifically about the scented candle moment from TRANSHIPPING Afl 5. In some context, when Se-ri goes to the market during her free time, she is separated from her women’s team, lost, and has a hard time tracing Jung-hyuk’s address. Plus, since it’s late at night, her sense of direction is even more watered down.

When Jung-hyuk finds out that Se-ri is lost, he quickly cycles to the market, but cannot find her. Eventually, he remembers her obsession with scented candles and buys one, lights it and holds it high above his head in the hope that Se-ri will walk towards the light. With Davichi’s Sunset from TRANSHIPPING OST as the perfect background music, Se-ri’s worried face turns into a moment of reflection when she realizes the Jung-hyuk, who comes as a literal knight in shining armor to rescue her, always in the right place and at the right time. As she walks over to him, Jung-hyuk breathes a sigh of relief and says, “This time it’s not just a candle, it’s a fragrance. However?’ To which Se-ri smiles cheerfully and says a simple “Right” back.

This scene may seem like a simple cute moment between the two lead roles, but it has a much more meaningful attitude as it shows how important Se-ri has become to Jung-hyuk. Especially knowing that the two cannot be together given the literal ‘boundary’ problem between them. But when Jung-hyuk knows that Se-ri is in trouble, he drops everything and goes looking for her. Although stoic in nature, you see a change in Jung-hyuk thanks to Se-ri. On the other hand, Se-ri, who has had much of the forgettable flings, finds a safe place in Jung-hyuk and confirms that he will be there for her no matter what.

An underestimated moment with so many thoughts and emotions. And that’s all because of a scented candle.
