The German car manufacturer Volkswagen (VW) will invest € 3.5 billion in 2025 to build a digital divide and products, including a cloud-based cloud computing platform to connect cars and customers to offer new services such as carpooling .
German automaker said on Thursday that it is working on a new "vw.OS" operating system that will be introduced in 2020 in its VW electric cars.
These vehicles will have designed a completely new "electronic architecture" to facilitate autonomous driving functions, VW said in a statement.
Instead of about 70 different independently functioning sensors and indicators in each vehicle, new cars will have sensors connected by a new, own operating system.
In this way, the information collected by the parking sensor can be linked to high-resolution, brakes and maps. They allow the car to park itself as soon as the camera on board sees a free parking space.
According to VW, it is easier to update your own software as third-party software and from different suppliers with different sensors.
Volkswagen has already announced that it will launch a car sharing service called "My Share" in Berlin in the second quarter of 2019. In the course of time, the company wants to expand to major European markets, but also to selected cities in the United States and Canada.
