The A4 is one of the company's core models for the Audi brand.
That is why Audi has redesigned its successful middle class model after four years of production. The exterior contains new expressive changes to the brand. The large touch screen MM key offers customers the controls they are used to from smartphones. Many engines are equipped with a mild-hybrid (MHEV) system. Efficiency and driving comfort benefit from this electrification.
This also applies to the S4 TDI – for the first time it is supplied with a V6 TDI diesel engine, a 48-volt main electrical system and an electrically driven compressor. This provides a more spontaneous motor response. It is a unique combination of performance, torque and efficiency in a certain segment.
The body design has a sporty appearance
Thanks to its sporty accents, the modern middle-class Audi models are even more dynamic. The one-piece radiator grille is wider and lower and emphasizes the width of the horizontal line on the front and rear of the body. Significantly modeled "muscles" above the mudguards are visible from the side view, and a side line is located between them. Together they form strong contours that externally signal the genres of the legendary first Audi quattro.
The Audi A4 now has standard LED reflectors, with a first-class model with Matrix LED technology with adaptive high-beam headlights. The concept of equipment levels is also new: the exterior is now labeled as Basic, Advanced and S-line. The S4 and A4 allroad quattro have a specific design. Customers can choose from 12 body paint colors, including the new Terra Gray.
The interior of the Audi A4 also has horizontal lines. In the center of the instrument panel is a large touchscreen MMI touch, which forms the center of the new operating system. The new interior interior combinations and interior S-line combinations can be freely combined with external lines. In the dark it gives the interior accents of a complete contour / mood lighting.
Extensive digital connectivity
With the new MMI system, the digitally linked Audi A4 offers the same control as a modern smartphone. The MMI touch screen with acoustic feedback takes over the function of the previous MMI rotary / push button controller in the center console. The TFT touch screen is 25.7 cm (10.1 inches) diagonal. His images are intentionally clean and simple. The menu structure with its strict hierarchies makes it easy to operate. MMI makes online searching for databases possible. Natural voice control, also a function of the new system, understands many common language formulations.
Navigation is more versatile and user-friendly in the upgraded Audi A4. The Audi connect and Audi connect plus portfolio includes many online services, including Car-to-X services that use the collective intelligence of the Audi fleet. In addition to online information about traffic signs and dangerous traffic locations, as well as On-Street Parking, traffic information has been added. Thanks to the digital connection to the Audi A4 infrastructure, the server receives information from the central computer that controls the traffic lights, so that the driver can adjust his speed to the nearest green phase. In the instrument panel, they can see the individually recommended speed and the time remaining until the next green phase when the driver is waiting for red. The system thus contributes to efficient driving and the flow of traffic. It is part of the Audi connect offer and will be introduced gradually in selected European cities.
Audi connect emergency call and service call are standard, the free myAudi app connects the driver's smartphone with the car. With the optional Audi connect electronic key function, the driver can unlock and lock the vehicle and start the engine using a compatible Android smartphone. With personalization, up to 14 myAudi users can save their settings to individual profiles.
The upgraded Audi A4 also has a range of optional functions – functions on demand. After purchasing a car, three infotainment functions can be ordered if required. In Germany these are the MMI plus, the DAB + digital radio receiver and the Audi smartphone interface. These functions can be activated permanently or for a specific time. To become familiar with it, the customer can get a one-time activation for a test period of one month. Already at this stage he has the option to expand it – again for a month, for a year or permanently. If this is not the case, the function is automatically deactivated after the time has expired.
The new MMI has a new main unit. It is connected to a new, spatially separated communication cabinet. It brings all connectivity tasks together: telephony, Audi connect and integrates the WLAN hotspot. You can also opt for the audio phone and the Bang & Olufsen Premium sound system with 3D (3D) sound at the front of the cabin.
There are two options for the instrument panel: two partially analog instruments with display of the driver system, or in combination with the MMI plus the fully digital Audi virtual cockpit plus. The 12.2-inch (12.3-inch) Full HD screen is controlled via the multi-function steering wheel to switch between three different views. The head-up display translates important information in the front window into the driver's field of vision. A4 has many assistance systems available. They are grouped in three sets "Tour", "City" and "Parking". The "Tour" is an important adaptive speed support assistant with Stop & Go function and automatic distance maintenance. Together with the predictive driving assistant, the Audi A4 can predict and accelerate even without a front-end vehicle. To this end, Car-to-X, navigation data and traffic signs are evaluated.
Driving with electric
At the start of sales in Europe, the Audi A4 will be a six-cylinder engine with direct fuel injection. Three gasoline TFSI and three diesel TDIs. Their performance varies from 110 kW (150 hp) to 255 kW (347 hp). The range will be expanded later with two diesel engines: 30 TDI with 100 kW (136 hp) and 35 TDI with 120 kW (163 hp). All engines with reserve meet the Euro 6d temp emission standard.
Three engines are equipped with a 12-volt mild-hybrid (MHEV) cable system from the start of the sale. Reduces fuel consumption and increases comfort. Two more will follow in the short term. In normal traffic, the MHEV system can reduce fuel consumption by up to 0.3 liters per 100 kilometers, depending on individual Audi measurements.
Either a 6-speed manual gearbox, a 7-speed gearbox with double clutch S tronic, or an 8-speed automatic tiptronic, combined with front or four-wheel drive, are available for each engine. In addition to the standard TFSI gasoline engine, all A4 models have a standard gearbox (S tronic or tiptronic). The 110 kW (150 hp) 35 TFSI gasoline engine is equipped with manual gearbox and 40 TDI with 140 kW (190 hp) and front-wheel drive.
The chassis is sport-harmonious
The standard chassis with sporty result forms the basis, as an alternative to other versions, including adaptive chassis. The comfortable chassis has a limited ground clearance of 10 millimeters compared to the standard chassis and the characteristics of the damper. The sports chassis has a limited ground clearance of 23 millimeters. A more dynamic basic tuning improves the sporty character while maintaining comfort. Both the normal and the sports chassis can have a shock absorber with characteristic control on request. Both adaptive chassis are linked to Audi drive select. This dynamic control system also influences the characteristics of dynamic control, automatic transmission and throttle. The driver can set 5 different profiles via Audi Drive Select.
Both sports models – the Audi S4 TDI and S4 TDI Avant – will be sold on the European market with the new V6 3.0 TDI diesel engine. It delivers 255 kW (347 hp) and 700 Nm of maximum torque. The S4 TDI accelerates with this in 4.8 seconds from 0 to 100 km / h and further to an electronically limited maximum speed of 250 km / h.
The high engine temperature at the start and the almost linear increase in power is supported by the electrically driven EAV compressor that is connected to the new 48-volt main electrical system of the vehicle. It eliminates the usual deceleration of the turbo engine and allows a direct response to the accelerator pedal. The 48 V network has even more efficiency potential than the MHEV system for A4 models with a standard 12-volt power supply system. The 12-volt power supply is connected to the 48 V network via a powerful DC converter (DC / DC). The powerful 48-volt starter is coupled to the engine by a grooved belt and delivers a regenerative power of up to 8 kW when braked by the engine. The electrical energy reservoir is an air-cooled lithium-ion battery with a capacity of 0.5 kWh. It is located under the floor of the luggage compartment. The real S4 system reduces fuel consumption by up to 0.4 liters per 100 kilometers.
The standard is an automatic tiptronic with 8 speeds and permanent all-wheel drive. Audi installs a sport differential on request. It actively distributes the torque to the rear wheels, where during dynamic turns it transmits a larger part of the torque to the outer wheel in a turn. This eliminates the tendency to understeer. The Audi S4 has a series-specific chassis with specific tuning for the S models. Customers can further improve the sporty driving experience with the optional S-chassis with shock absorbers.
All roads and non-roads
With its quattro all-wheel drive and 35 millimeters increased ground clearance, the Audi A4 allroad quattro combines high driving comfort and lighter terrains. Comfort and dynamics can be further improved with the optional chassis of the shock absorber. With the additional off-road mode in Audi Drive Select, 6 driving modes are available. From the A4 Avant Estate the all-road look differs in detail on the body as bumper screens and flared mudguards. In addition, the A4 allroad has 12 millimeters larger wheels and an extended track – 6 in the front and 11 millimeters in the rear.
The Audi A4 allroad is available with three engines – one gasoline and two diesel. Automatic transmissions are standard. The luggage compartment has a basic volume of 495 liters and the A4 Avant, with a maximum volume of 1,495 liters available by folding the rear seats back and loading them onto the ceiling. The doors and the tailgate are electrically operated as standard.
For quick decision makers
At the start of the sale, the brand with four circles prepared a special edition of the A4 model with the "edition one" label. It is available for both the Limousine and Avant stations with three versions – the 2.0-liter four-cylinder petrol engine TFSI with 180 kW (245 hp), the four-cylinder 2.0 TDI with 140 kW (190 hp) and the diesel six-cylinder 3.0 TDI with 170 kW (231 hp). The exterior design contains elements from the S-line Exterior, complete with striking details from Designpaket Black. In the interior, the customer has a choice of two designs – design selection or S line Interior.
The sale starts in Europe
The Audi A4 and S4 TDI models will be sold in Germany and Europe this fall.
In markets outside of Europe, Audi sells the S4 and S4 Avant with the 3.0 TFSI engine. Direct-powered six-cylinder turbo petrol engine delivers 260 kW (354 hp) and delivers a maximum torque of 500 Nm at 1370 to 4500 rpm. The acceleration from 0 to 100 km / h is 4.7 seconds (Kombi S4 TFSI Avant 0.2 seconds longer), maximum is electronically limited maximum speed 250 km / h.
