The Euro NCAP consortium has decided to expand its scope. In addition to crash tests, it will now also focus on measuring the environmental impact of cars. The results of the first measurements are already available.

The European Union is putting pressure on all sectors to reduce emissions and protect the environment on all fronts. The auto industry is probably under the greatest control of the professional and lay public. So the Euro NCAP organization, known as a long-standing authority that assesses car safety, usually through crash tests, decided to cooperate.
However, the area of determining the environmental performance of motor vehicles has also been added to the portfolio. The very first round of the so-called “Green NCAP” tests compared 24 cars of different categories. The tests focused on the amount of greenhouse gases and harmful particles produced and energy efficiency. This is the first test phase, which will be expanded in the future to take into account the emissions footprint of fuel and electricity production as well as the entire life cycle of vehicles.

The first test of ecology was conducted in the spirit of diversity. The 24 models included electric cars, hybrids, small gasoline cars, mid-range diesel sedans, cars that run on CNG, gasoline and diesel SUVs and vans. This time, rechargeable hybrids were missing, but we’ll see them in the second round of testing. As usual with Euro NCAP, the rating is expressed in stars, with a maximum win of five stars.
As expected, two electric cars scored the full number of stars, namely the Hyundai Kona and the Renault Zoe. However, the comparison of the Toyota C-HR and Honda CR-V petrol hybrids turned out to be more interesting. While Toyota received 3.5 stars, Honda only 2.5. The difference is due to the different concept of hybrid drive. The Toyota system works more efficiently, allowing the petrol and electric motors to work together, while at Honda the petrol engine is mainly used as an electricity generator. Toyota has also improved its more efficient particulate filter.
The Peugeot 208, Peugeot 2008, Renault Clio, Renault Captur, Volkswagen Polo and the diesel Mercedes-Benz C-Class 220d and Seat Ibiza, which burned compressed natural gas, also outperformed the Honda hybrid, with a three-star gain. The rest of the tested cars scored worse, mainly because of the higher weight, poorer aerodynamics and better performance, as these are mainly SUVs and passenger cars.
