Smartphones are capable of making top-quality photos, while Google's Pixel and Pixel 3 XL are currently among the best in the market. The problem occurs when we want to photograph in low light because the built-in sensor is relatively small.
Google saved this Night Sight function, using artificial intelligence and HDR technology improves light and color considerably even with photos in very bad light.
Night Sight appears for owners of Pixel phones via the update of the camera application. After the update, the function can be included in the camera settings. At the first start, a tip appears above the trigger to activate Night Sight. When we take photos, we need to keep the phone as calm as possible, because Pixel will create multiple photos at the same time.
Photos that Pixel can record with Night Sight are exceptional (see example below). Especially good results are observed in environments with very bad light, because sometimes the colors become somewhat unnatural in the dark.
Also Night Sight is not the most suitable for moving objects, because the aperture is open for a long time and combines several captured images, so that the final picture may appear cloudy. Better results will be observed when taking photos of people, still objects and self-portraits, because Night Sight also works with the front camera.
During testing, several people have noticed that Night Sight sometimes has problems with the white balance, which misjudges the environment and thus changes the mood of the image. In any case, the photos will be sharper and contain less noise, which outweighs the incorrectly estimated white balance, which can somehow be corrected in photo editing programs.
Unlike the Huawei version of the night mode that improves the HDR, even when shooting in daylight, no night vision will notice any difference if the function is turned on or off.
Night Sight is already available as an update to the Google Camera app in the Google Play Store, but only works on Pixel 3 and 3 XL, Pixel 2 and 2 XL and the first version of Pixel and Pixel XL.
