The governor's office in Ankara has announced that the suspects are Ahmet Celikten (39) and Osman Gundas (38). Both admitted to the action. Celikten fled from prison and Gundas has committed several crimes, including car theft, drug law offenses, threats and health damage, according to an announcement from the AP agency.
An attempt to provoke chaos
Speaker Tayyip Erdogan, the Turkish spokesperson, described the act as an "attempt to provoke chaos." Ibrahim Kalin added that Turkey is a safe country where all foreign missions are under the protection of the law.
The spokesperson for the US embassy David Gainer confirmed the incident Monday morning that nobody was injured. Gainer thanked the Turkish police for a quick response.
Relations between Ankara and Washington have been strained by the arrest of American Reverend Andrew Brunson who was accused of espionage and terrorism in Turkey. Brunson denies these accusations. Washington considers his imprisonment as unacceptable and calls for his immediate release.
The US imposed financial sanctions on two Turkish ministers in early August. Later they doubled the import duties on Turkish steel and aluminum, although according to the White House this step is not related to Brunson's case. Turkey has notified retaliation rights to imports of certain products from the USA.
As a result of the dispute, the value of the Turkish lira has dropped to an all-time low.
