Indonesia has sunk more than 100 illegal fishing boats, most from Vietnam

JAKARTA, 22 August (WebNoviny.sk) – Indonesia dropped 125 mainly foreign vessels for illegal fishing. They informed the authorities about this on Wednesday. The event took place simultaneously at eleven locations in the country on Monday.

The government did not inform the neighboring country because it did not want to exacerbate mutual relations. Up to 86 ships came from Vietnam, another 20 from Malaysia and 14 from the Philippines. The ships sank so that they filled them with sand.

Since October 2014, Indonesia has sunk 488 illegal fishing boats, mostly using explosives. The government has said that such vessels pose a threat to the fishing industry there. People who fish illegally often use workers from Southeast Asian countries to work.
