It is frightening and irreversible. In Greenland, for the first time in history, the oldest and most fiery polar ice

Climate change is therefore much stronger than we have thought so far. The oldest and most common Arctic sea ice is spreading. It opens the coast of the northern coast of Greenland, which until this year was considered frozen forever. Ice has not been in the past in the past. The Arctic region north of Greenland is also called the last ice zone. With the simultaneous heating of the sea ice, it was assumed that the ice would last the longest. However, it seems that the scientists were wrong. What scientists in Greenland are doing this year, many scientists call it frightening.

"Almost all sea ice on the north coast of Greenland is completely broken and cracked. The open sea is unique in this area because it is considered the last ice zone. However, it seems that it will eventually be further west"She said Ruth Mottram from Danish meteorological institute.

Arctic ice melts in the area, according to scientists, caused heat waves that hit the northern hemisphere in the first half. There was a split twice. At the end of February and the beginning of this month.

The ice in Greenland is particularly powerful thanks to the transpolar drift, the cold sea current, which also draws sea ice from Siberia. Sea ice in Greenland reaches an average of four meters thick, but it also creates "ledges" up to 20 meters. Thomas Lavergne of the Norwegian Meteorological Institute described the melting of local sea ice in a single word – "frightening".

Thomas Lavergne adds that by cracking, breaking and heating the accumulated sea ice on the northern coast of Greenland, the ice crystals go to more southern and warmer areas. It also assumes that the last ice field will be irreversible this year. Even if the sea ice is frozen again, the structures are so damaged that they melt faster than ever before when they are re-heated.

Arctic ice that is melting in Greenland this year has appeared twice this year. In early February, when the average temperature reaches about -20 ° C. This year, however, it remained above freezing for up to 10 days. The second extreme occurred at the beginning of August, when the temperature in Greenland rose to an unusually 17 ° C. In combination with the strong warm southern wind, the sea ice melted again.

And why is this message so alarming? According to scientists, especially for the intensity and speed of warming and melting of the whole Greenland. Glowing sea ice also affects the Gulf Stream, which has been in the "worst state" for the last 1600 years. Warm wave flow affects the climate in North America and Europe. If this stream is called sea water disrupted, we must prepare for dramatic changes in climatic conditions, even on the territory of Slovakia.
