The white caught brackish crab (Rhithropanopeus harrisii) has led to a drastic reduction in the number of mussels and shells on the other side of the Baltic Sea. Now it has settled in Blekinge, reports P4 Blekinge.
The species originates from North America and is believed to have gone to the Baltic Sea in the barrel water on ships. In Estonia, studies have shown that stocks of the invertebrates on which the crab lives have been drastically reduced.
Two young crabs were first found in Sweden four years ago, in Sörmland. 14 adults of different sizes have now been found in Hästö in Karlskrona, indicating that the crab was given and began to multiply.
– It is important that we now control this species. How it spreads and settles in the province, "says Martin Stålhammar, marine biologist at the provincial board of P4 Blekinge.
It has been very difficult to get rid of the strange crab when it has become fast.
"We hope that the predators eat it and we have a bargain where a perch spits out a crab like this.
