(sda., mjk., jok.) In the past year, newborn girls and boys usually got the names Emma and Noah in Switzerland. In the ranks follow two and three of the first hit parade 2017 with the girls Mia and Sofia, with the boys Liam and Luca. This shows the published on Monday Evaluation of the Federal Bureau of Statistics.
The preferred given names differ depending on the language region. Noah and Mia are especially popular in German-speaking Switzerland, while French-speaking Switzerland has chosen Emma and Gabriel as leaders. In the Italian Switzerland, Leonardo and Sofia dominate. Gian and Angelina are in first place in the Romansh area of 2017.
The popularity of the first name differs, but also from canton to canton. Noah and Alina were in 2017 in the canton of Bern. In the Canton of Glarus, however, classical David and Emily came first. St. Gallen chose Noah and Nina as their first names, and in the canton of Geneva Gabriel and Sofia are at the top – just to name a few.
In 2017, 42,508 girls were born in Switzerland, 478 of whom received the first name Emma. 420 are Mia and 352 Sofia. In the 44,873 newborn boys, Noah (490) and Liam (434) were in the first two places, behind which Luca took third place (360).
The name of the boy Noah has been at the top since 2013. For the girls Emma took first place in 2017 and 2014, and Mia took the place in 2015 and 2016. Of course trends in the first name change in the course of time: in the sixties, for example, Maria was the most popular name for girls in Switzerland, as this video shows:
