Jil Teichmann is in her first WTA final. Thanks to the help of kicker Xherdan Shaqiri.
Liverpool star Xherdan Shaqiri (27) seems to have a good nose for tennis talents. BLICK reported in 2014: The Nati kicker helped with fundraising, so the Swiss junior hoped that Jil Teichmann would be able to record all four junior Grand Slam tournaments in the following season. Shaq sold 5000 Praline boxes with his favorite photo and a signature card, the proceeds went to Teichmann.
Five years later, the Shaqiri promotion seems to be bearing fruit. On Saturday, Teichmann, now 21 years old, will be in the final of a WTA tournament for the first time. With 6: 3 and 6: 0, the current world number 146 in Prague beats the former top-20 player Barbora Strycova (WTA 39). Now in the final on Saturday (11 am, live on SRF 2) against the Czech Karolina Muchova – the first WTA title in Teichmann's career is within reach!
Teichmann is an avid fan of Barça
Talk about Shaqiri. Teichmann's native born and raised in Spain knows football. She is an avid Barcelona fan, so fingers crossed the team, which probably destroyed the hope of the Champions League on Shaq Liverpool.
"I used to be completely obsessed with the team," Teichmann told the Schweizer Illustrierte. "As a six-year-old I was allowed to go to the field with the players, time and time again to the stadium, every player knew, every position had the shirt of course."
The legendary Camp Nou already knows, now Teichmann is swinging the big tennis court. With a final victory in Prague, she jumped in the top 90 of the world ranking. Whoever is in the top 100 is automatically qualified for the Grand Slams. Another milestone.
