Data from the US Energy Information Administration showed Thursday that natural gas supplies increased by 48 billion cubic feet in the week ending 17 August to 2,436 billion cubic feet.
Analysts had predicted that US natural gas inventories would increase by 47 billion cubic feet.
On an annual basis, US natural gas stocks dropped by 684 billion cubic feet compared to the same period last year.
At 14.50 GMT the natural gas futures for delivery in September increased by 0.1 percent to $ 2.96 per million British thermal units.
