An honest British couple have become heroes in Greece after their good did reduced a woman to tears.
Jessica Frank and Edward Gibson were holidaying in Crete when they found a bag containing a whopping £ 6,200.
While many may have handled the cash, Jessica and Edward took it straight to a police station, Teesside Live reports.
Jessica, 22, who works for Middlesborough Council, and 24-year-old Edward, a trainee electrical engineer, accidentally discovered the bag containing 7,000 Euros lying in the street.
The pair picked it up and went straight to the local police station in Agios Nikolaos where it was reunited with a shopkeeper.
She dropped her takings and Jessica tripped over the bag full of money as she walked past a shop.
"We were walking around a couple of small souvenir shops when I kicked something that looked like a little bag, with my foot," said Jessica, an apprenticeship development advisor from Middlesborough.
"When we opened the bag – I can not really explain what it was like. There was just money all wrapped in elastic bands. Our first thought was that we did.
"We took a taxi and handed it in. They counted it in front of us and it came to around 7,100 Euros. We knew there was a lot in there but that's a lot – it was so unexpected. "
The couple, who live in Darlington, left the matter with the police and went back to their hotel.
A short while later the phone rank and it was the police who wanted to see them down at the station. She had reunited the cash with her owner and she wanted to meet the couple.
"We got to the police station and they said 'someone wants to meet you'," Jessica said.
"There was this little old lady just sat there – she was so emotional. She kept hugging us and blessing us with good luck for the rest of our lives. She owned a little money, and it was a lot of money. "
She's lost count of the number of times people have asked and Edward whether they felt like keeping the haul instead of handing it in. But, says Jessica, the thought literally never crossed their minds.
"Not one bit of us, neither me nor Edward, thought 'let's keep it,'" she said. "We just took it straight away to the police station."
News of the find last Monday quickly spread to the Greek media and Jessica's phone has been ringing off the hook ever since. They were stopped in the streets by Crete and they were not interested in anything. come of their actions.
