GAry Mabbutt was forced to return home for surgery after a rat gnawed his toe during his vacation in South Africa, as the former Captain of Tottenham Hotspur has revealed.
The gruesome incident occurred while Mabbutt visited his daughter in Kruger National Park six weeks ago, followed by seven days in a hospital in the UK.
Mabbutt, who won 16 English caps, suffers from type 1 diabetes and has lost part of the feeling in his feet, so he was unaware until he woke up.
"I went to sleep and at night a rat entered the bedroom, climbed into bed and decided to chew on my foot," Mabbutt told BBC Radio 5 live.
"It has made quite a big hole in my toe, went to the bone and ate under my foot.
"It bit my daughter's thumb first in the other bedroom, and then she came up to me and said," Dad, something has been bitten. "If you're in Africa, you think of snakes and scorpions."
