Hollywood legend Doris Day, whose films made her one of the greatest female stars of all time, died at the age of 97.

The singer became an actress with star in films such as Calamity Jane and Pillow Talk and had a hit in 1956 with Que Sera, Sera (What Will Will Be, Will Be).

Her screen partnership with Rock Hudson was one of the largest box office draws of the 1950s and 1960s.

In a statement, the Doris Day Animal Foundation said that she died on Monday at her home in Carmel Valley, California.

It said she was "in excellent physical health for her age, until recently a serious case of pneumonia contracted".

"She was surrounded by some good friends when she passed," the statement continued.

In later life she became an advocate of animal welfare

Mary Ann Von Kappelhoff was born in April 1922 and originally wanted to be a dancer, but had to give up her dream after she broke her right leg in a car accident.

Instead, she started her singing career at the age of 15. Her first hit, Sentimental Journey, would become a distinctive tune.

Her films, including Alfred The Hitchcock & The Man Who Knew Too Much and That Touch of Mink, made her known all over the world.

But she never won an Oscar and was nominated only once, in 1960, for Pillow Talk, the first of her three romantic comedies with Hudson.

The honor she received was the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2004 and a Grammy achievement for life in 2008.

Her latest release, the compilation album My Heart, went to number one in the UK in 2011.

Day's healthy neighbor girl was a popular part of her myth that was sometimes called ridiculous.

"I've been there so long, I knew Doris Day before she was a virgin," the comedian Oscar Levant once remarked.

Day herself said her "Miss Chastity Belt" image "was more made up than any part of the film [she] ever played. "

Her life was certainly not that sunny. She has been married four times, divorced three times and once a widower.

She also suffered a nervous breakdown and had serious financial problems after a man squandered her money.

In the 1970s, she turned away from running to focus her energy on her animal base.

According to the organization, she did not want a funeral, memorial or serious marker.
