The recently unveiled Pixel 4a is currently the most affordable smartphone in Google’s lineup. Pixel series devices are known for their cameras and now, thanks to the efforts of the DxOMark specialists, you can see how successful the camera was in the Pixel 4a model.

This smartphone uses only one camera module. It is based on a 1 / 2.55-inch 12.2-megapixel sensor with 1.4 μm pixels. The camera contains a lens with an aperture of f / 1.7, optical image stabilization and autofocus with phase detection. All these hardware resources are supplemented by Google algorithms.

While the camera specifications look good on paper, the Pixel 4a only scored 111 points in DxOMark tests. This is comparable to the results of the Huawei Mate 20 X smartphone, which was released in late 2018.

The single camera handles the typical tasks well on its own, but the final score was affected by the lack of ultra-wide angle and telephoto modules. In the photo quality test, the camera scored more than 122 points. But due to the lack of additional modules, the Pixel 4a only scored 34 points in zoom tests. And video recording capabilities are rated at 98 points.

DxOMark experts have attributed the benefits of the Pixel 4a camera to the accuracy of color reproduction, the effectiveness of autofocus and noise reduction. The main drawbacks are the limited dynamic range, insufficient depth of field and not the best situation while retaining details. Photos taken in low light were good. Overall video quality is affected by frame displacement, average exposure, and texture rendering.
