25% of SMEs in Latin America do not have an antivirus solution



The IT security company ESET shows that 6% of small and medium-sized businesses in the region do not carry out any form of control to protect their data.

ESET, a company responsible for the proactive detection of threats, gathered information from executives, technicians and managers from more than 2,500 companies from 15 countries in Latin America, with which they created the ESET security report 2018; a report with a summary of the state of security for companies in the region.

One of the most striking information left behind by the report is that it 25% of SMEs that participated in the study claimed they did not have an antivirus solution. On the other hand 53% of SMEs insured that ransomware, together with malware and vulnerabilities, the main concerns in terms of safety.

In the case of ransomware, concerns increased by 10% compared to 2016 and 15% claimed to be the victim of this threat in 2017. An important fact, however, is that, despite being one of the biggest concerns, the implementation of protection solutions for mail servers when the main propagation vector is via mail.

The study also reveals that the use of backup solutions was also reduced compared to 2016 and 74% of those who make backup do not classify their information. "Taking that one of the most important ways of acting of ransomware families is encrypting the files, it is essential to have a good backup solution and to classify the information properly. Otherwise the damage can be critical. ", said Camilo Gutierrez, head of the ESET Latin America research laboratory.
