Liverpool must do everything they can to keep Gini Wijnaldum as the contract approaches

Liverpool should do everything they can to maintain Gini Wijnaldum’s services, says Rio Ferdinand, who has explained why he believes the midfielder is so underrated.

Newcastle United’s £ 25m signing in 2016 is set to go into the final six months of his current Reds deal – at which point he would be able to pre-contract with a foreigner club – but Ferdinand, who won six Premier. League titles with Manchester United, Liverpool’s old enemies, the 30-year-old finds a rare commodity.

The Netherlands international has been nothing short of sensational for Jurgen Klopp’s side and an artist whose consistency and superior prowess are almost unparalleled – even in a squad as big as the German boss’s.

Team Talk quotes Ferdinand greeting Wijnaldum on BT Sport saying, “I have to be honest: I love this player.

“He’s very selfless, his intelligence, he’s completely underestimated because he can play any position in midfield in that central area.

“He plays a number 10 role for the Netherlands, as he defends here [for Liverpool].

“We get players that you play with in your career that fans probably don’t appreciate very much.

“Because you know how much work they go through on the field, how valuable they are.”
