Virus cases top 2.1 million, deaths nearly 51,000


The number of COVID-19 cases in Africa now stands at 2,120,967, according to the Africa CDC update on Friday.

At least 50,924 people have died from coronavirus-related complications since February, while 1,791,600 patients have recovered to date, the latest data shows.

Southern Africa is the most affected region of the continent with 874,700 cases and 22,900 deaths.

However, it also has the highest number of recoveries: 794,300.

About 715,500 cases have been reported in North Africa, 262,500 in East Africa, 203,600 in West Africa and 64,700 in Central Africa.
